This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into ammeters and voltmeters. Ammeters measure the electric current flowing in a circuit in amps and voltmeters measure the voltage across an element in volts. To use an ammeter, you should connect it in series with the circuit since the internal resistance of an ammeter is very close to zero. To use a voltmeter, you should connect it in parallel to the element or device of which you wish to measure the voltage across. Voltmeters have an internal resistance that is very high ideally near to infinity. This video contains examples and practice problems of calculating the shunt resistance needed to convert a galvanometer into an ammeter and into a voltmeter.
